– As the Junior Officer Development Course (JODC) 02/2025 enters its final phase, Weeks 5 and 6 place strong emphasis on the Military Studies Module, which is divided into War Studies and Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) Systems and Policies Studies.
This module is designed to broaden participant’s understanding of how military thought and institutions have evolved to meet the demands of contemporary security environments. Week 5 introduced course participants to the foundations of War Studies, beginning with Clausewitz’s interpretation of war and progressing into a wider review of key strategic theorists such as Sun Tzu and Jomini. Through discussions on historical shifts in warfare and the influence of modern technologies, participants were encouraged to appreciate how different ideas and contexts shape the conduct of war. Rather than focusing on a single school of thought, the lessons provided a balanced view of multiple perspectives. In Week 6, the focus shifted to the organisational workings of the RBAF, highlighting essential processes carried out by core departments such as the Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Office, Finance and Acquisition, Logistics, Manning and Records, the Personnel Finance Division, and J6 Office of Joint Force Headquarters (JFHQ). Group presentations enabled participants to apply what they learned, develop analytical and communication skills, and strengthen their confidence. The module concluded with a written assessment, rounding off a learning experience that ultimately prepares future junior officers with the strategic awareness and foundational competencies required for service in the RBAF.
